Blog Deux

Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.

I learned about 2 diseases that affect the bones. Rickets, which affects calcium  absorbtion and makes your bones bend easily . Scurvy, being the other, affects the absorbtion of Vitamin C and makes your bones brittle.

Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.

I made TONS of new friends and I went to the beach a few times. =]

Ø Where do you want to be (academically) in six months?

I want to be comfortable with the college atmostfere and be getting grades that show my ability.

Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.

I am able to make time for homework even if all I want to do is have a little fun on the weekends.

Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.

I would like to stay away from the whole party every day of the weekend schedule.

Ø Explain how you approach studying your a) textbook and b) notes.

I never rely on my notes completely. I use my notes as a basic template as to what I'm going to be studying. The notes I take are what I hear from the teacher so those key points help me to find what I need to study in my textbook.

Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.

I have a different note taking technique for every class so it really depends. If it's mainly a lecture class I take all the notes I possibly can and re-organize them later in my own time.

Ø FAST FOOD NATION:
Ø Watch this short 1980’s McDonald’s commercial. McD’s reps have actually claimed they do not target children in their ads.. Pay attention to the tagline: “The Hamburglar is very clever and very sneaky!” Why is this ironic?
The  whole commercial is ironic to me. Why in a classroom? They obviously  tried putting the commercial in a setting that  kids know. They know what school is about. Then here comes the "sneaky" Hamburglar right into the classroom. They want the kids to be thinking about food even when they are sitting in a classroom atmostfere perhaps.

Ø Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie food through toys and cute corporate mascots?

No, but I do believe it's the parents responsibility to teach their children what is good for them and what is bad also. It's not just the media that's causing children to eat this food. Parents are a major factor too.

PEACE.

Haha, yes! No one has mentioned yet the fact that Ronald McD is in a classroom. That is the ultimate in sneakiness ;)

Glad you're making new friends and go to hang out at our gorgeous beaches. It is more difficult for students living in the dorms to stay away from partying though, so that will be a challenge. There are so many nice distractions but you sound like you are capable of sorting them out.

I love how you take notes in class and then re-organize them later. That is a great technique and it forces your brain to tackle them yet another time.
